Hear the Week's Best New Canadian Music: Grandtheft & Jazz Cartier, Hunnah, Haviah Mighty

BY Exclaim! StaffPublished Aug 13, 2021

You know what day it is! Not only do we — for Rebecca Black's sake — gotta get down, but since it's Friday the 13th, we've also gotta get spooky.

It's a "B.I.G." week with Grandtheft and Jazz Cartier's collaboration, alongside the fruits of Haviah Mighty and Mala Rodríguez's pairing, Exclaim! New Faves alum Sade Awele and the Serengeti band, and k-os and his Toronto mentee KAGE E. Brampton's Hunnah shows her appreciation and Arkells swing (x3) us into the weekend, when they'll also bring live music back to Toronto by playing at the Budweiser Stage x3.

Renowned Canadian roots singer-songwriter Suzie Ungerleider — formerly known as Oh Susanna— reintroduced herself by releasing her new album My Name Is Suzie Ungerleider this week. We've got highlights from that, as well as new singles from Cots and a l l i e, and lead-off album announcement tracks from Absolutely Free ("Interface"), Le Ren ("Dyan"), and Astral Swans ("Flood") that are getting us excited to hear the breadth of what they've been cooking up.

There's also a spectral Titus Bank remix by Oshawa's Dizzy and an acoustic off-the-floor version of T. Thomason's lovely Bruce Cockburn cover. Toronto's Wayley and 19-year-old popster Alex Frew also go acoustic, while Quebecer Safia Nolin delivers a beautiful "sunset" version of her song "PLS."

So whether you're superstitious or just a little stitious, best believe you'll find great music on The Eh! List below, presented by Mary Brown's Chicken & Taters — all Canadian and proud of it!
