Hall & Oates to Release 74-Song Box Set in October

BY Jason SchreursPublished Aug 25, 2009

Hair farmer Darryl Hall and facial hair groomer John Oates have announced that they will release a box set looking back at the four-decade-plus career of Hall & Oates. Do What You Want, Be What You Are: The Music of Daryl Hall and John Oates will be released on October 6, two weeks before the duo play one of the last shows at their hometown arena, the Philadelphia Spectrum, which is being demolished in late October.

"This box set will be a treasure for the diehard Daryl Hall and John Oates fans and a creative surprise to the casual fan," Oates told Spinner. "All the hits are there but the real gems are the unreleased tracks and live performances that showcase the true depth of our life's work as professional songwriters, producers and artists."

In addition to all of their hit songs, such as "Maneater," "Rich Girl," "Private Eyes," "Kiss Is On My List" and tons more, the 74-song box set also includes 16 previously unreleased tracks, many of which are live. And in the tradition of making packages like this extra special, the box set includes a 60-page booklet with exclusive photographs (more than a few of which will definitely include Oates's hirsute upper lip) and a full biography on the band. Interspersed throughout the booklet are Hall & Oates testimonials from some of rock's greatest, including Mick Jagger, Carly Simon, Cheap Trick's Rick Nielson, Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard and Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump. (Okay, that last guy isn't so great.)
