Gunter Hampel

For over 30 years this German band-leader, composer and multi-instrumentalist has been at the forefront of the creative improvising scene. One of the first artists in the late '60s to initiate and document collaborations between European and North American players who were exploring the new music of that period, these recent sextet and duo performances confirm the continuing high level of Hampel's music as a composer, soloist and band-leader. From the slow, sensuous bluesy funk grooves and intensifying free collective dialogue to the vibrant swing, this is consistently rewarding music and a great place to begin an appreciation of his artistry.
