Great Lakes

BY Christopher WatersPublished Jun 1, 2000

The debut disc by Athens, GA trio, Great Lakes, starts with a slice of chamber pop suite-ness before plunging into the pet sounds of wheezing California pop that permeate the self-titled CD. Working with Robert Schneider (Apples in Stereo) and a small army of studio guests, the pop classicists carefully crafted an immaculate album that apes the best of '60s pop tones and '70s reefer rhythms. The recorded works of Van Dyke Parks, Brian Wilson and Todd Rundgren are the ghosts that haunt wonky and scintillating tracks like "A Little Touched," "Giants and Tigers" and "Virgil."
