Gordian Knot

Emergent

BY Roman SokalPublished Feb 1, 2003

Although a little wanky at times, in terms of comparing it to modern rock, the Gordian Knot collective of superstar musicians in the prog realm can spin up some wickedly daring and thrilling compositions. Spearheaded by bass/Chapman Stick guru Sean Malone, this incarnation features some bona fide playing by master drummer Bill Bruford (Yes, King Crimson), Steve Hackett (Genesis) and Jim Matheos of Fates Warning, and the production edge is supplied by Napalm Death/Cannibal Corpse producer Scott Burns. This is a rollercoaster of rock, swaying from ethereal and antique angular jazz to the pummelling depths of grinding attacks. This will satisfy Dreamtheater and Trey Gunn Band fans.
