Devin Hoff plays acoustic bass and Ches Smith plays drums and they do it in California. This is a CD of duets that is neither bebop nor fantasy, but is so much fun that I almost hesitate to call it jazz. In this age where a high degree of technical competence is almost a given, I tend to be attracted more to what is communicated and interesting ideas. Bebop Fantasy has a good dose of the former and all the joy of a highly competent kid bashing away on Zappa grooves as a reference to the latter. Spooky ambience, hard rocking meters, genuine enthusiasm, great tunes and a refreshingly snotty commentary on virtuosity. Get it and have fun.
