Glasvegas To Release Christmas Album

BY Cam LindsayPublished Oct 24, 2008

Perhaps it's their obsession with Phil Spector that inspired the idea or maybe it's just because Christmas is the most depressing time of year, but Scotland's moody throwbackers Glasvegas have announced they'll be releasing a seasonal record this December.

Titled A Snowflake Fell (And It Felt Like A Kiss), an obvious reference to Spector's "He Hit Me (It Felt Like a Kiss)," the mini-album will drop digitally on December 1, as well as with a special limited two-disc edition of their self-titled debut album.

The band recorded the album in Transylvania, of all places, and collaborated with the the Concentus Choir on a version of "Silent Night" in both English and Romanian, recorded at the St Nicholas Church in Brasov.

Speaking to the Sunday Mail, guitarist Rab Allan said, "It sounds like Glasvegas but the songs James [Allan] has written are based on Christmas themes — that time of year, how people feel. I find some of it quite moving in terms of the lyrics. Like the first record, some of it is very hard hitting and really rings true. It looks at the darker side of Christmas. That's not to say it isn't a happy time, it's just this is our take on it. The songs are incredible — some are definitely better than what's on the first album."

Rab also mentioned that Glasvegas will be throwing their hat in the ring to compete for the highly coveted number one Christmas single in the UK, which is often won by the worst song imaginable. "One song called 'Please Come Back Home' is beautiful and I think that will be the single. It would be nice to get the Christmas No. 1 but we are not expecting it. We all know the X Factor winner will get it."

About recording in the land of Dracula, Rab added, "Recording here is great; it just feels right. We have a Christmas tree and lights in the studio and we wear hats and stuff. I don't know why but this country just makes it feel like Christmas. Everywhere you look there are castles and churches and all the things you associate with that time of year. Plus it's freezing. Being in a band means you go places you wouldn't see otherwise. Romania is absolutely beautiful. It is amazing and the people are so friendly. I love it."
