As homage to his long-running radio show on BBC's Radio 1, Gilles Peterson has carefully crafted a double CD running the gamut of genres, styles and artists. As with his show, Gilles Peterson Presents: Worldwide is a collection of everything you would never expect to see together. The soulful scales of Jill Scott flutter alongside disco house musings from Herbert; Dizzy Rascal and Amy Winehouse are separated by a splice of Latin from Gotan Project; while Benga's wobbly dubstep and an Amerie favourite ("One Thing") nearly rub shoulders. Mainly sitting as a compilation, Peterson leaves most of the tracks intact, only adding a minor twist here or there (as with the extended, radio-esque intro and outro on Outlines' "Just A Lil' Lovin"). Others, such as Erykah Badu's "Green Eyes," with its classic, ethereal quality of years gone by, and soft, muted vocals amidst the whispers of old-school vinyl, along with M.I.A.'s "Galang" and Little Dragon's "Twice," are perfect examples of songs that need nothing to enhance their brilliance. Though the compilation is nothing more than a collection of numbers, old and new, found across the musical spectrum, its seeming simplicity is exactly why it works so well.
