Abandon Your Friends

BY Sam SutherlandPublished Oct 1, 2005

Why do these one-time fashion-core superstars want you to abandon your friends? Because they have none, and they need all the love they can get. It’s hard to imagine that this band were once truly relevant and interesting, and they’re doing their best to obliterate any memories of those halcyon days. On Abandon Your Friends, the band pull out every hardcore cliché in the book, drowning in the tired sound they once used so well to their advantage. Boring drumming backs uninspired guitars and relentlessly unoriginal barking vocals, with the occasional melodic hook tossed in to please the kids. In fact, the band ditch the screaming altogether on several tracks here, instead opting for the gentle Taking Back Sunday approach that seems to sell so many records these days. What happened?
