Though Flying Lotus's work in the film field up to now has seen him score productions, he is now set to take a seat in the director's chair for an upcoming short film.

Titled Royal, the producer is credited as "steve" (short for his birth name Steven Ellison). The short will debut as part of Sundance NEXT Fest, set to run from August 12 to 14 at the Theatre at Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles. Taking to Twitter this afternoon (July 6), he described the film as "an awkward love story that's not for the kiddies."

Last month while playing Levitation in Vancouver, FlyLo hinted at a new secret project but cut himself short before revealing any real details.

Six new independent films from the 2016 Sundance Film Festival will be "paired with a music act, live performance, or conversation with an icon of independent cinema." This year's event will see Shamir perform alongside So Yong Kim's Lovesong, while Sunflower Bean will perform alongside a screening Andrew Neel's Goat. A "surprise music artist" will also perform alongside Jim Hosking's The Greasy Strangler.

Flying Lotus last scored the Eddie Alcazar-directed short film FUCKKKYOUUU, which was screened at Sundance last year. He is also set to lend his musical talent to an upcoming film starring Shia LaBoeuf.
