Fantastic Plastic Machine is Tomoyuki Tanaka. His new album "Beautiful" is out on Emperor Norton Records.
Current fixations:
Hypnosis, who did all the art work for Pink Floyd is having exhibition in Tokyo currently. I went and talked to Hypnosis guys. Their fantastic products amazed me again.
Mind-altering work of art:
Originally, I was an editor for fashion mags so I always like to work for visual artworks. I just make some awesome page with the best visual artists.
Most memorable or inspirational gig and why?
Kraftwerk, 1998 in Tokyo. That was as exactly same as their live in the early 80s but I felt the show was extremely fresh.
What has been your career high and low?
I have never thought in my career there is high and low. Because I always take same stance for remixing some artist's songs, my own album or any kind of job.
What should everyone shut up about?
To divide music in genre forcibly by it's rhythm or style or whatever. Eat shit for categorising!
I would drop everything to play a benefit for:
Fabulous audiences. (Of course!)
What trait do you like and dislike most about yourself?
Being selfish. both like and dislike.
What would make you kick someone out of your band and/or bed, and have you?
Never. Never want to do that. That's the reason why FPM is only myself.
When I think of Canada I think:
The country has the audience and the record shop I love most.
What is your vital daily ritual?
Record shopping.
How do you spoil yourself?
Record shopping.
What was your most memorable day job?
Had a session with string players from Sigma Studio in Philadelphia.
If I wasn't playing music I would be:
I'm doing it right now but designer for fashion magazine, visual planner.
What is your greatest fear?
To be picky about everything.
If you had a superpower, what would it be?
I may have ability to see the future I think.
What makes you want to take it off and get it on?
To discover new music, people, situations. I mean, "Contacting"
Music and sex: Is there a difference? Why?
I guess it has some differences but also similarity. Like feeling or grooves.
Strangest brush with celebrity:
I had this offer to do DJ before Rod Stewart's gig in Hawaii. I couldn't do because of my schedule.
Who would be your ideal dinner guest, living or dead, and what would you serve them?
Four members of Kraftwerk. They will be the most difficult people to set dinner with.
What does your mom wish you were doing instead?
"My home papa" means good daddy.
