Even though Chris LaRocca hadn't released his own music in over two years before releasing his new EP perhaps!, it's clear that he hasn't skipped a beat. The Woodbridge multi-hyphenate who cut his teeth in the music industry with Toronto-based punk rock band Elos Arma happily throws genre conformity out of the window in a four-song flash of pop, rock and hip-hop.
No two songs on perhaps! sound the same—and the project as a whole carves out a niche of its own within pop music. The production on opener "left out" exemplifies chaotic perfection, with frantic high hats and crashing guitar propelling the arrangement which bleeds into the distorted vocals and infectious flows of "deep end." A driving guitar riff punctuates standout track "life of the party" before LaRocca brings his bold returning effort to a close with the gently-plucked acoustic strings and lyrical contemplation of "linger."
