Sepultura founders Max and Igor Cavalera are quite literally getting back to their Roots this fall. Though both metal musicians no longer play in the thrash band they started in the '80s, they're going to be performing the group's landmark Roots release in full for an upcoming North American tour.
The trek was fully confirmed by guitarist/vocalist Max Cavalera today (July 29), who revealed he and drummer brother Igor are set to take the sounds of 1996's Roots through to a number of concert spots come September. As they had done for a set at this year's Amnesia Rockfest, they'll be playing the heavy and rhythmic song cycle, which includes singles "Roots Bloody Roots" and "Ratamahatta," in full.
"Metalheads! It's time," Max Cavalera said in a statement. "Twenty years ago, we released the Roots album and changed the face of metal forever. Now, we're returning to 'the roots' to show everybody the magic and inspiration of the Roots live experience! You cannot miss this 'Return to the Roots 2016!'"
Joining the band on select dates will be the Black Dahlia Murder, Combichrist, Allegaeon, All Hail the Yeti, and Oni. You'll find the full date and venue details for the trip, which hits several Canadian cities, down below.
Released in 1996, Roots found Sepultura further moving away from their early thrash sound towards a more groove-heavy approach, partly inspired by the rhythms of their native Brazil.
The record was steeped in local politics, referencing the 1964 coup d'état in "Dictatorshit," and featured guest performances from Brazilian musician Carlinhos Brown, as well as Mike Patton and DJ Lethal. It was the last record from the group to feature founding member Max Cavalera, who would later form Soulfly and Cavalera Conspiracy.
Drummer Igor Cavalera would stay on with the group after his brother's departure, but ultimately left Sepultura in 2006.
