Earthquake Pills

General Happiness

BY James KeastPublished Dec 1, 1999

Calgary quartet Earthquake Pills offers up an enthusiastic slice of rock’n’roll well worth a listen on their second effort. They’ve adapted some of the less seemly aspects of ‘80s synth pop, and at times you can guess their favourite Talking Heads album is Little Creatures. General Happiness isn’t without the occasional misstep, like the catty chatter that opens “Ambulance,” or singer Chris Temple’s Feargal Sharky-ish croon on the charmingly-titled “Lips On Tits,” but its worth the ride for fun like “Self Love” or the self-aware “Give ‘Em What They Want.”
