Dum Dum Girls Leader Dee Dee Goes Solo as Kristin Kontrol

Dum Dum Girls leader Dee Dee (a.k.a. Kristin Welchez) has announced she's stepping away from her longtime pseudonym and sound to enter a solo career as Kristin Kontrol. A debut album is expected to be released later this year via Sub Pop.

A press release explains that Kristin Kontrol is a more electronic-minded project than Dum Dum Girls, with the sonic palette said to touch on elements of new wave, synth pop, R&B and Krautrock. Welchez explained in a statement that she wanted to "open things up and shed light on significant influences that felt off-limits in Dum Dum land."

"The music is so different from anything I've ever done," she said of starting Kristin Kontrol. "I felt compelled to shed the alter-ego instead of trying to morph Dum Dum Girls into something else. I didn't want to mess with that legacy."

An introductory video featuring a few words from Kristin Kontrol, a tease of some glittery '80s-pop sounds, and footage of a recent photo shoot can be found down below.

Dum Dum Girls' most recent release was the Too True LP in 2014, which had also been issued through Sub Pop.
