ED09 for String/Wind Ensemble: Live at Roulette

BY Glen HallPublished Aug 25, 2009

Forty minutes of slowly evolving drone-based music, ED09 is an extended reflection on single pitches and their overtones. Some textures give the appearance of an unearthly accordion or surreal harmonica slowly inhaling, exhaling, breathing with a meditative calm. From time to time, pitches enter, microtonally shifted, creating undulating waves on the calm surface of the 22-piece orchestra's long tones. Violins, cellos, basses, saxophones, clarinets, flute, trombone and composer Pitre's bow electric guitar slowly combine and dissolve in a dreamlike balancing act conducted by hand signals. Materials are drawn from a score that allows the musicians to make decisions as to the pace at which the piece reveals itself. Despite the modus operandi, ED09 never feels static. It is constantly changing within small limits, giving the sound a delicate, eerie life. Need to chill out? This CD can take you out of yourself.
