Dishing the Dirtbike

BY Vish KhannaPublished Oct 26, 2008

Though Halifax’s Buck 65 has released strong records over the past five years, his early experimental spirit has been somewhat tempered, as he balances his penchant for arty hip-hop with his obligations as a major label artist. Starkly self-aware, Rich Terfry recorded three new albums on his own, aiming to complete and email the Dirtbike trilogy to friends before Halloween. "I wanted to make a record like I did when I was a kid,” Terfry explains. "If I want to make a 90-second song about rabies, I need to be able to do it without considering anything else. I just want to act on it. And if my idea involves sampling some ‘untouchable’ artist, I want to do that too.” Featuring collaborations with Sage Francis, Old Man Luedecke, and Tunng, Dirtbike is raw, gutsy, and streaming for free at buck65.com.
