Djam Karet

New Dark Age

BY Roman SokalPublished Jun 1, 2001

Most modern psych is usually pretentious, plain old boring and almost always sprinkled with self-indulgent cheese. Once in a while, an obscure psych band surfaces that possesses the ability to take risks. Luckily, Djam Karet throw in enough disciplined experimentation to their mix to overcome the aforementioned plague. While their jazzy guitar solos show some age, the rest of the material is pornographic sounding in a weird way, and instead of getting a wah-wah guitar, an interesting Vangelis/Blade Runner-like atmosphere creeps through. It's up there with fellow L.A. basin psych rock band Farflung. Give them a try.
