Before releasing one of the most adventurous electronic albums of 2013, Amygdala, Stefan Kozalla (aka DJ Koze) was mostly known for his remix work. In 2009, DJ Koze showcased his best remixes on Reincarnations: The Remix Chapter 2001-2009), including reconstructed tracks from Battles, Matias Aguayo and Matthew Dear. As the Germen producer's stock has grown over the past five years, so has the stature of his collaborations, as followup compilation Reincarnations Part 2 finds Koze remixing songs by excellent electro tastemakers like Caribou, Herbert, Apparat and Gonzales.
On tracks like Moderat's already terrific "Bad Kingdom" and Mount Kimbie's anthemic "Made to Stray," DJ Koze keeps the energy high, replacing headphone-friendly beats with dance club bangers. But it's on tracks like WhoMadeWho's "Keep Me in My Plane" and Ada's "Faith" that Koze lets his freak flag fly, deconstructing the tracks until they resemble something more eccentric and nervy. Overall, DJ Koze's expert sequencing makes Reincarnations Part 2 one of the most listenable remix albums you'll hear this year.
