Digits

'Get Through' (album stream)

BY Sarah MurphyPublished May 19, 2015

Toronto-based synth-pop songsmith Digits has kept busy with projects like his serialized story/album hybrid, mixtapes, and EPs, but he's finally set to unveil his sophomore full-length effort next week — and Exclaim! is giving you an early listen.

Titled Get Through, the record sees Digits revisiting some older bedroom recordings, but updating them with the full studio treatment. They were polished up and recorded with other new material at Gas Station Recording on Toronto Island — following a return to the city after spending the last few years living in London and Berlin.

According to a press release, the switch to a studio recording setting has resulted in noticeably higher production value, as well as an embrace of full-fledged pop sensibilities, as opposed to the "atmospheric and psychedelic bent" heard on previous releases.

As hinted at in the title, Get Through is an homage to "persevering through the most difficult times in one's life" and learning to cope with anxiety and heartbreak. These themes are immediately addressed on the glossy yet gloomy opener "The Fear," and carry on through "Love Is Only Affection," "When You Look Inside" and "Where Do You Belong," though by the time to "Say Goodbye" with the album closer of that name, Digits and his listeners finally get a sense of closure.

A story of emotional survival, backed by shimmering synths and pristine production, Get Through is an iridescent and illuminating journey through tough times. The album officially lands on May 26, but you can give it an early listen in the player below right now. You can also pre-order it here on Bandcamp.
