Deerhoof

Free MP3 Album!

You've gotta love a band that writes on their website "it's been too long since we offered anything free on our page!" And when that band just so happens to be Deerhoof, well, then you're in for a real treat. Following up last year's free EP (which featured a splendid cover of My Bloody Valentine's "Lose My Breath"), the Bay Area's most dynamic trio return with a 13-track collection of live performances, outtakes, remixes and covers. It is what it is (read: don't bother with the live tracks or the Dedication soundtrack leftover), but there are plenty of "goodies," as they call them, within the mixed bag. Remixes of The Runners Four's "Rrrrrrright" and Friend Opportunity's "Kidz Are So Small" benefit from some erratic drum enhancements. And how great is "Someone's swizz-deerhoof mashup we found," which is exactly what it says it is: a hip-hop assault on "Believe E.S.P." that's adorably D.I.Y. A cover of "Perfect Me" by Irish singer-songwriter So Cow is shambolic yet entertaining (he sounds a bit like an overexcited Graham Coxon) and shows just how compliant Deerhoof's material can be.
