Dead Messenger

'The Owl in Daylight' (album stream)

Montreal power-pop purveyors Dead Messenger teased some new material last year with a video for "Cold Summer," but now they're back with a brand new full-length called The Owl in Daylight — and Exclaim! is giving you an exclusive first listen.

The record was recorded at and shaped by the band's Saint-Henri studio. "We wanted to take advantage of the studio and the idea of doing things we could never do live," the band said in a statement. "But at the same time the most important thing was we wanted it to sound like us, no matter where we were going with it."

The noble pursuit gets achieved across the 11 album tracks, which churn out bouncy, high-energy jolts of melodic, rock-tinged pop.

The band's DIY fingerprints are found all over The Owl in Daylight, from the writing to the recording, and even right down to the silk screening of the vinyl copies. And while the sound and aesthetic is uniquely theirs, Dead Messenger did enlist the help of Aaron Holmberg for mixing, plus a few guest musicians including Timothy Hertzog of Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

The Owl in Daylight will officially get to see the light of day on May 27 via Skull Central Recordings, followed by an album release show at Skull Central's Montreal headquarters on June 17. Right now, though, you can give it a preview in its entirety in the player below.
