David Yow to Release Book of Comedic Cat Drawings

Perhaps you're a fan of the Jesus Lizard, but you think their upcoming autobiographical coffee table book looks a little too dry. In that case, you'll be pleased to know that frontman David Yow has another book on the way, this one about cats. Copy Cat: And a Litter of Other Cats is due out on August 5 through Akashic Books.

The "very important" book consists of comedic drawings of felines, with the portraits inserted into real photographs. Each of the cat pictures is based on a pun — alley cat, tom cat, cat burglar, catatonic and so on. See what these punning pictures look like over at Akashic's website. There are also lots of cat picture's at Yow's personal homepage.

Yow said in a statement, "I love cats. Always have. The only time I didn't have a cat was a brief hell in Chicago where I lived in an apartment whose landlord didn't allow them. At that place, I had a life-sized cardboard cutout of a cat which I named Toody. I also love wordplay. I'm the only adult I hang out with who still gets a kick out of puns. I make up palindromes. I used to write songs and poems (these days, I leave that for the songwriters and poets); in this book of cat-pun drawings, I have made a concerted effort to come up with ideas that range from really funny to really amusing. The entire litter of animals in this book are line drawings that are 'coloured in' with photographic textures, and each cat is dropped into a photographic setting. Yep, that's the truth."

Although this 160-page hardcover book isn't officially due out for the better part of a year, it's available to pre-order right here.

Copy Cat will be preceded by The Jesus Lizard Book, which arrives on December 16.

In related news, Yow premiered his epic short film/music video "Five Directors' Interpretations of Opening Suite" through Stereogum. Watch it below.
