David Beckingham

'Just When the Light' (album stream)

BY Sarah MurphyPublished May 24, 2016

Vancouver-based singer-songwriter David Beckingham is about to embark on a solo adventure outside of his work with Hey Ocean!, releasing his debut album Just When the Light later this week. Before the record is actually out, though, Exclaim! is pleased to present an advanced stream of the album in its entirety.

Beckingham wrote the new material over the course of the last few years, while navigating an "intense" time in his personal life that found him grappling with his band going on hiatus, the end of a long-term relationship and a medical condition that put his ability to sing at risk.

We've already heard the emotional turmoil translate into the previously shared single "Soldier," but now listeners can get a wider glimpse into Beckingham's world on the full 10-song offering.

It opens with the gentle bounce-along gait of "Explosion," setting the tone for other refreshing folk-pop gems like "Montreal," "Sleepless City," and "Places." "Forest" follows, unveiling a darker edge that goes even deeper on "Slowly."

The heart-wrenching "Adi's Song" is an album standout that blends a sense melancholic nostalgia with lush, orchestral instrumentation before the record wraps up with the honest, apologetic "In Spite of All the Damage."

You can hear the whole collection of songs weave together by giving Just When the Light an early listen in the player below. It will be officially released on May 27.
