David Beckingham

"Soldier" (video)

BY Sarah MurphyPublished May 10, 2016

David Beckingham is breaking out from his role as a member of Vancouver-based indie-pop outfit Hey Ocean! to deliver his debut solo album Just When the Light later this month. Before the one-man offering arrives in full, though, Exclaim! has your exclusive first look at the video for "Soldier."

The forthcoming record was written over the last few years and recorded in just the last 12 months. It hears Beckingham channelling "an intense and personal time" leading up to and after Hey Ocean!'s decision to go on hiatus, as well as the end of a long-term relationship and a medical condition that threatened his ability to sing.

It shouldn't be a surprise then that there's a lot of emotion embedded in the new tunes, and "Soldier" in no exception. The soft, sparse and expressive track has been paired with a new video that captures some of the darker sentiments behind the song.

It was shot in Vancouver in an old factory space known as the Alsco Linen building, where the coats and clothing of wealthy locals were often stored after cleaning. Some abandoned fashionable treasures remain and make appearances in the new clip, along with some of Beckingham's collaborators on cello, piano, violin and guitar.

Scroll past Beckingham's upcoming live shows to watch it all come together in the video for "Soldier" below. Just When the Light will be released on May 27.
