Daniel Romano Drops Surprise 'Ancient Shapes' Album

BY Sarah MurphyPublished May 27, 2016

Daniel Romano is currently one of Canada's most prolific musicians, whether he's busy working on multiple albums of his own or producing records for other artists, and he just released a brand new LP titled Mosey today (May 27). In true Romano fashion, though, he's doubled down and offered up a totally separate surprise album, as well.

The unexpected offering is called Ancient Shapes and is officially credited to Romano's moniker of the same name. The record is also available today (May 27) through You've Changed.

The label released a statement about the bonus project, explaining that the new material hears the singer-songwriter channelling power-pop influences akin to punk and proto-punk acts like Buzzcocks and Television. The full explanation reads:

Ancient Shapes is Daniel Romano; immediate and fierce power pop reminiscent of early Buzzcocks and Television; music hard and desperate, as it should be, vocals balanced on the rails but never quite falling off. Ancient Shapes is a study of a blank and nameless generation. This is the sound. These are the moves. The name is Ancient Shapes. May we all have fearless death tomorrow.
