We first learned of Dan Deacon's score for vermin-themed documentary Rat Film late last year, and the production wizard has now shed more light on what we can expect from the music itself.
A video feature finds Deacon and director Theo Anthony speaking about their collaborative scoring process, including how they made music for the film using live rats. A custom fibreglass table was made with a theremin located in each corner, allowing the rats to trigger sound the closer they move. You can take in the process in the player below.
Rat Film's score will arrive October 13 through Domino Soundtracks, and is available for pre-order on "rat hair" coloured vinyl, CD and cassette here. A run of Canadian screenings has also been announced, with chances to view it in Vancouver, Ottawa, Calgary and Toronto.
As previously reported, Rat Film explores the rat population of Baltimore (the city both Deacon and director Theo Anthony call home) delving into the creatures' relationship to human beings. Here's its official synopsis:
Neither walls, fences, nor alleys, separate us from these pests who make their homes in and amidst our boundaries. Rat Film is a dazzling new documentary work that uses the rat — as well as the humans who love them, live with them, and kill them — to explore the history of the city of Baltimore. As Rat Film demonstrates using a unique blend of poetry and analysis and even a dash of sci-fi, there's never been a rat problem in Baltimore, it's always been a people problem.
