Daddy G/Various

DJ-Kicks

BY Sergio ElmirPublished Nov 1, 2004

Grant Marshall, a.k.a. Daddy G, digs into his crates and comes through with the sort of DJ Kicks album you would expect from this original Wild Bunch Sound System Rude Boy and on-and-off member of Massive Attack. Soulfully hypnotic dub floats into moody cuts from Daddy G’s trip-hop era, including Tricky and Massive Attack, as well as remixes of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Les Negresses Vertes. The mix winds back down and travels to funk by the Meters, hip-hop from Foxy Brown and soul from Aretha Franklin, creating a blend of rhythms and styles that reflect a lifetime of crate digging and music making. By not straying from the original sounds that inspired Daddy G to start DJing over 20 years ago and including tracks that reflect the evolution of his personal tastes, this instalment of the DJ Kicks series becomes a journey through the musical explorations of one of the founding Daddy’s of the famed Bristol Sound, and one of the best mixes I’ve heard in a long time.
