Cleen

Second Path

BY Matt MernaghPublished Sep 1, 1999

Unable to decide whether they are a bad Depeche Mode band or an ambient electronica group has really hurt Cleen’s Second Path. It is neither good dark pop-tronica, nor an interesting dance-ambient offering. The first half of Second Path contains many elements of Depeche Mode. Opener “Sunburst” is almost a Depeche Mode outtake with a drumming dance rhythm that makes a bigger impact on “Did You Forget.” It is around this point that the band begins to offer up their better dance-ambient grooves. These spacious sounds are much better when there aren’t vocals.
