Chus & Ceballos and Joubin / Various

Blended Sound: 002

BY Sarah FergusonPublished Jun 17, 2008

Chus & Ceballos are to house music what a greenhouse is to plants: protecting, nourishing and creating new life. Purveyors of the Iberican sound, these artists embrace absolutely non-commercial music’s sheer vitality and biodiversity while at the same time being famous for working with commercial artists. Showing disdain for stereotypes and classification, these tunes are filled with deep and unconscious rhythms, incurring a grab for the headphones so nothing gets missed. Joubin’s disc moves admittedly slow at times, but creatively and unexpectedly breaks through the lull with dynamic, expansive tracks like "Drum Nation” (by Midnight Society featuring Lula) and "Is Stereo” (by Paco Buggin & Joy Marquez). The three DJs and the artists of the tracks they play show movement into harder, darker and more genuine times of music. With "Techno Girl” (by Rob Mirage) and "Nature Sound” (by Sharp & Smooth), Joubin closes his mix on an up-note, like an artist, as do Chus & Ceballos with "Beatbox” by Behrouz.
