After being nominated for Best New Artist at this year's Grammy Awards and releasing her Once Upon a Time EP just last month, 24-year-old rapper Chika has announced her plan to retire from the music industry, citing mental health issues and toxic stan culture.
The artist first announced her retirement on Saturday (April 10) by tweeting "I'm retiring." After a flood of responses from her followers, Chika followed up her announcement with two videos explaining that her mental health has been declining thanks to "psychotic fans."
"Today, I shared that I was thinking of retiring because the mental toll being in the industry has taken on me is not something you bounce back from easily," she wrote. "I've told my team, I've told my therapist, I've told friends and acquaintances. Today I told Twitter. What followed was a hoard of psychotic fans rejoicing in the decline of my mental health, harassing me as if I spoke to them first."
Later responding to her followers via video, Chika called out those who wished suicide on her, saying that she hopes her toxic fans kill themselves too.
"I came on here and said I was retiring because that's where I'm at — physically, mentally and emotionally," she said. "And you stupid bitches flooded my comments immediately, not know what the fuck I'm going through. You want me to give a good god damn about you and your stupid ass fifth-grade stan friends?"
Chika went on to further explain that she suffers from depression and that the flip reactions to her mental health struggles were taking a toll. "When you have depression, the negative self talk you have towards yourself is deafening," she explained.
