The year since Exclaim! named Chiiild an "emerging Canadian artist you should hear" in 2020 has been a fruitful one. The Montreal-based artist born Yonatan Ayal has been delivering a steady stream of sultry, slow-burning alt-soul singles in recent months. Ahead of an upcoming album scheduled for release this summer, Chiiild has shared new single "Gone."
"Gone" sets Ayal's airy, captivating voice to a backdrop of gently plucked strings, giving plenty of space to his heartfelt, subtly uplifting lyrics like "We can learn from times like this / And they can be gone" and culminating in a cluster of horns.
Said Ayal in a press release, "It's hard enough to find the words. 'Gone' is a song about the simple misunderstandings that come up when you least see them coming."
The accompanying video similarly blends an understated foundation with flourishes of psychedelia, with a black-and-white clip of Ayal and a companion driving a retro car through the countryside featuring subtle surreal details like incongruous reflections and lyrics displayed on surfaces.
