Classic power pop outfit Cheap Trick have cancelled an upcoming show in Vancouver after learning that the same company that constructed the stage which collapsed during a windstorm at the Ottawa Bluesfest last month would be involved in assembling the stage at the West Coast gig as well.
The band were to play an outdoor show during Vancouver's annual Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) on September 1, but have decided to play it safe after finding out that Mega-Stage (Berger), who provided staging for the Bluesfest, would also be working the exhibition.
In a statement on their website, the group explained that they will never set foot on a Mega-Stage, or any other stage built by production company Berger, ever again. Since the plans had already been made to use the company throughout the rest of the PNE, Cheap Trick had to put the kibosh on their performance.
"All potential alternatives have been explored by the band and promoter and were exhausted, leaving Cheap Trick with no other option than to cancel their September 1st engagement at the PNE," the post reads. "Unless current investigation[s] prove otherwise, the band will not, as a matter of principle, but more importantly, as a matter of safety, appear on a Berger stage in the future."
As previously reported, Cheap Trick are actively helping out Ontario investigators into finding out why the stage in Ottawa, which the band fled just in the nick of time, came tumbling down. While the collapse incurred a number of injuries -- with the group's driver affected, as seen in below in a video shot by singer Robin Zander -- no one died in the incident.
