Chalk

Black Box Broken

BY I. KhiderPublished Apr 1, 2002

Chalk delivers hard rock and punk with catchy melodies tempered with an abstract electronic edge. Some tunes are electronic distortion noodling but most are quite standard, like the grooveable "Cry Baby King” and "Kiss.” Chalk utilises the traditional band gear of drums, bass and guitar, along with a whole whack of synths, samplers and drum machines. Power chord-driven, oft-distorted vocals bellowing out tunes with serious attitude, the overall feel of the Black Box Broken is more rock than anything electronic. The melodies are pretty standard, yet are good ones, and the tasteful use of electronic noise accentuates the sounds, making the rock/electronic blend work very well.
