With this year's E·MO·TION, Canadian singer Carly Rae Jepsen has made the surprising transition from pop megastar to critical darling. Now, she has given her followers a little something extra by covering Years & Years' song "King."
While the original version of the song, which came out earlier this year, was a thumping dance-pop anthem, Jepsen and two backing players turned it into a stripped-down ballad for BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge. Jepsen's voice is good enough to remind you that she first got her start on Canadian Idol, and when the guitarist and keyboard lock into a groove, it manages to evoke the thudding house beats of the original while still retaining its balladic gentleness.
