Holger Czukay, the famed bassist and co-founder of Krautrock legends Can, has died. According to several German media reports, he was found dead in the original Can studio in Weilerswist near Cologne that he had in recent years converted to an apartment. He was 79.
As of press time, it is unclear exactly when and how Czukay died. Officials are currently investigating the death.
Sadly, Czukay died only a few days after his wife Ursula, who passed away on July 28 on her 55th birthday.
Since forming in 1968, Can boasted a lineup featuring Czukay, who also helped engineer and record many of the group's albums. Czukay remained a fixture in Can and a key driving force until he left the group to focus on a solo career after the band's 1997 album Out of Reach.
In recent years, his solo releases had been celebrated via a series of reissues.
Earlier this year, Can's drummer Jaki Liebezeit also died at age 78.
