This past weekend was the three-year anniversary of the late, great David Berman's death by suicide. Today, perhaps in remembrance of his friend and collaborator, Will Oldham — otherwise known as Bonnie "Prince" Billy — has unearthed a duet that he recorded with Berman in 2016.
The song is a cover of the Ramones' 1983 song "Outsider," featuring Oldham and Berman sharing lead vocals over a gentle, country-tinged instrumental that transforms the original's chugging, mischievous energy. It was recorded with William Tyler, Chris Scruggs and Pete Townsend (not to be confused with Pete Townshend.)
Oldham's wife Elsa created the single's cover art, which is a cross-stitch that pays tribute to both Berman and late "Outsider" writer and Ramones bassist Dee Dee Ramone.
Listen to Oldham and Berman's cover below, along with the original song.
