For their eighth album Penny Sparkle, innovative art-pop trio Blonde Redhead continued to tinkle with their sound, adding more electronics and toning down on the guitar work. As we said in our review, "Blonde Redhead choose these progressions like carefully calculated chess moves." It turns out the Penny Sparkle move was multi-faceted, as they have revealed plans for different versions of the same songs.
Speaking with Spinner, Blonde Redhead guitarist/vocalist Kazu Makino said the Penny Sparkle recording sessions resulted in a wealth of material. "We ended up having many different versions," she said. "We're going to have a couple more albums of the same songs, I think... A lot of the versions that we didn't choose are the one's that sound 'more like us... They're good but we ended up choosing ones that were out of our comfort zone. The whole thing was pretty uncomfortable- in a good way. We have something here, even if we fail miserably."
The new versions of Penny Sparkle don't have a release date as of yet, but Makino said the songs could factor into their set on their upcoming tour. "I get some satisfaction out of some of these [other] versions," she said. "Some of them I really loved and I didn't want them to stay with me. I want people to hear them."
