A shooting at this weekend's Beyond Wonderland — a dance music festival produced by Insomniac Events — killed two people and injured three others, forcing organizers to cancel the fest's scheduled second day at the Gorge Amphitheatre in George, WA.
According to authorities from the Grant County Sheriff's Office, the incident took place around 8:30 p.m. local time on Saturday (June 17). The gunman — who is also among the injured — reportedly started firing randomly into the crowd at the overflow camping area just outside the venue, which can host up to 27,500 people.
"The shooter then walked away from where the incident happened," said Kyle Foreman, a public information officer with the sheriff's office, in a news conference [via ABC News]. He added that, when police arrived, the perpetrator "continued to randomly shoot into the crowd and the suspect was eventually taken into custody."
The suspected shooter's motive is currently unknown. Their name and age, as well as those of their victims, have also yet to be made public.
The second day of the festival was meant to begin yesterday (June 18) afternoon, but Beyond Wonderland cancelled the performance lineup (featuring Marshmello, Afrojack, Subtronics and more) in light of the tragedy.
"We would like to express our sincere appreciation to the local authorities and staff who acted quickly to manage the situation," organizers wrote in a statement posted to social media. "Our heartfelt thoughts and condolences go out to the family, friends and all those affected by the tragic event."
