Ben Gibbard

"Teardrop Windows"

As previously reported, Death Cab for Cutie leader Ben Gibbard is taking some time off from the group to issue his solo debut, Former Lives. Before the set officially arrives October 16 through Barsuk, though, you can peep new number "Teardrop Windows."

As a press release explains, the track was inspired by Seattle landmark the Smith Tower, which was once a major fixture in the Pacific Northwest's city skyline, but has since been eclipsed by newer buildings.

"To me, it represents the things we take for granted when something newer, bigger and flashier comes into our lives," Gibbard said of the song in a statment.

As for the music, apparently Gibbard wanted to "write a Big Star-inspired song," and fittingly the sweet pop song rolls by like a glossier, full-band attempt at "Thirteen." It also features some La's/R.E.M.-style 12-string melodies for good measure.
