Beck Says He's Not a Scientologist

BY Josiah HughesPublished Nov 22, 2019

Beck just returned with his solid Hyperspace album, but before you dig into the release, there's something he wants you to know: He's not actually a Scientologist.

In a new interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, the performer said, "I think there's a misconception that I am a Scientologist.... I'm not a Scientologist. I don't have any connection or affiliation with it. My father has been a Scientologist for a long time, but I've pretty much just focused on my music and my work for most of my life, and tended to do my own thing…. I think it's just something people ran with."

In the people's defence, they probably ran with it because he explicitly said he was a Scientologist. In a 2005 interview with the Irish Sunday Tribune [via Stereogum], Beck said, "Yeah, I'm a Scientologist.... My father has been a Scientologist for about 35 years, so I grew up in and around it and stuff…. There's nothing fantastical… just a real deep grassroots concerted effort for humanitarian causes."

Beck was previously married to actor Marissa Ribisi. She and her brother Giovanni are both prominent Scientologists. Beck filed for divorce from Ribisi earlier this year.
