BY Kaelen BellPublished Jul 8, 2022

Produced by Balancing on the Edge in partnership with A Girl in the Sky Productions and Thin Edge New Music Collective, Toronto's Anthropic Traces performance series welcomes an exciting array of trailblazing Canadian composers and artists to its 2022 edition.

Featuring original compositions by artists like Juro Kim Feliz, Bekah Simms, Cheldon Paterson (otherwise known as SlowPitchSound) and Anna Höstman, the performances will be accompanied by mask work, acts of contortion, juggling, aerial plastic and other forms of experimental and traditional circus disciplines performed by acclaimed circus artists from across the GTA and as far away as Montreal. Co-directed by Rebecca Leonard and renowned LA-based physical theatre director, Sonia Norris, Anthropic Traces was conceptualized by Cheryl Duvall, Ilana Waniuk and Rebecca Leonard and features masks designed by award-winning mask maker Melody Anderson (from the collection of Sonia Norris).

Balancing On the Edge originated as a one-off partnership between two Toronto-based collectives before evolving into a collaborative production company helmed by Rebecca Devi Leonard of contemporary circus troupe A Girl In The Sky and Cheryl Duvall and Ilana Waniuk of contemporary music ensemble Thin Edge New Music Collective.

Anthropic Traces showcases breathtaking circus performances by Amy Hull, Nicole Malbeuf, Samantha Halas, Natasha Danchenko, Louis Barbier, Lara Ebata alongside physical theatre artists Stephanie Carpanini, Rebecca Leonard, Dana Lerman and Margaret Lamarre. Featured musical performers include violist Aysel Taghi-Zada, cellist Amahl Arulanandam, violinist Suhashini Arulanandam, flutist Terry Lim, clarinetist Anthony Thompson, percussionist Nathan Petitpas and sound system engineer Justin Massey.

This year's production runs from July 27 to July 31 at Toronto's Crow's Theatre, with regular admission tickets going for $45, while others are pay-what-you-wish.
