"Archie, Marry Me" remains one of Alvvays' biggest songs to date; in fact, it's a bonafide classic at this point. Perhaps lesser known is the fact that it was also the song that made the quintet — anchored by East Coasters Molly Rankin, Alec O'Hanley and Kerri MacLellan — into a band.

Rankin and O'Hanley share their origin story, as well as the original demo for the song, on the latest episode of Hrishikesh Hirway's Song Exploder podcast.

According to Rankin, the lead single from the band's debut album was initially recorded on GarageBand with a classical guitar and generous amounts of the program's Megaphone filter. She had just finished a shift of waiting tables at a pub on Prince Edward Island, where she had moved one summer to make music with O'Hanley. He was on tour with a band in Australia at the time, so she sent him the recording via email, writing, "Who's song is this?"

"I'm personally not ready to revisit that demo," Rankin admitted, "but I'm happy that everyone else can. It's like listening to a 10-year-old! It's crazy!"

Listen to the podcast episode below to hear several snippets of the demo, as well as the story of how "Archie, Marry Me" made the band.
