Los Angeles surf rockers Allah-Las are back with a new album, Zuma 85, out October 13 via their own label Calico Discos (in partnership with Innovative Leisure). Today they share "The Stuff," the first taste of the new album.
The band said in a statement, "'The Stuff' is a tongue-in-cheek ode to rock tropes and nostalgic sentiments in the music world, including stereotypes of musicians and various trends in music."
When putting the album together, the band diverted from their regular method, showing up at Panoramic House recording studio in Stinson Beach with only sketches and riffs instead of fully-fledged songs. They spent three days in the studio with producer Jeremy Harris (White Fence, Devendra Banhart, Ty Segall), creating songs together in real-time.
"Everything just worked," guitarist and organist Miles Michaud said. "That studio just pulls it out of you."
Born out of the downtime of the pandemic, Zuma 85 is the follow-up to their 2019 album LAHS and finds the band departing from their well-troden surf rock sound and tapping into influences of late-era Lou Reed, John Cale and Roxy Music. In redefining themselves, the band aim to signify and capture the major technological and societal shift the world is facing.
