Shortwave Postcard

With an array of stringed instruments (mainly guitars of all frequencies), these two veteran Californian musicians impress with an album that sounds extremely calculated, but for the most part is actually improvised. Perhaps the improvised calculation comes from their experience, and the result is an intellectual and psychological, neo-classical horror film-type soundtrack. Cascades of eeriness dominate, with manipulated strings sounding like futuristic chemical-doused animals and wee moments of silence that dictate the rhythm. This is a really adventurous and first-rate album, with music that defies the boundaries of categorisation, and is worthy of many listens.
