Formerly collaborating with Mac DeMarco in Makeout Videotape, Montreal-via-Edmonton transplant Alex Calder has signed with Captured Tracks, who will issue his Time EP on March 26. Rather than make you wait, however, we've got an exclusive stream of the whole thing now.
Like his fellow Edmonton expats, Calder's rock'n'roll is decidedly softer, opting for smooth crooning and gentle guitar strumming over loud, noisy theatrics. Still, throughout the EP he demonstrates a knack for creative, forward-thinking arrangements, arresting leads and, most importantly, catchy hooks.
In a recent interview with Exclaim!, Calder explained how he and his peers arrive at such a similar sound while keeping their autonomy. "We all have similar tastes," he said. "A lot of the time we use each other's recording gear and instruments for everything. Hanging out all the time and being in the same bands all the time really contributes. I don't feel like there's any competition at all though, I think we can all realize the individuality with it."
