Swervedriver are in Toronto tonight (June 13) to play their first Canadian gig in about a decade and to commemorate the return one of the greatest bands of the '90s, I figured I'd feature this pleasant Wolf Parade cover by the Swervedriver front-man Adam Franklin.
One of the most blogged about tracks online at the moment, "Shine A Light" is the first track revealed from a forthcoming split seven-inch between Franklin and Handsome Furs, the other band featuring Dan Boeckner of Wolf Parade, set for release via Vancouver's White Whale Records.
Though his past was full of deafening distortion and a fondness for effects pedals, Franklin strips down his sound for a delicate take on the former Wolf Parade single from the bands debut, Apologies to the Queen Mary. The intertwining acoustic guitars are lush and gentle, harmonising with Franklins tender cadence, which is, perhaps, full of more emotion than weve ever heard from the oft lackadaisical vocalist. And overall, Franklin keeps all of the melody intact, somehow managing to keep it riveting even without that unforgettable, fist-pumping electric riff and head-nodding beat.
