The Acorn

'The Pink Ghosts' / 'Blankets!' (album stream)

It's Kelp Records' 20th anniversary, and the Canadian indie label is celebrating with a vinyl reissue from one of its franchise acts, the Acorn. Ahead of this new wax pressing, which collects the 2004 album The Pink Ghosts and the 2005 EP Blankets!, the new two-LP package is available to stream on Exclaim.ca.

The Pink Ghosts takes a sprawling, atmospheric approach to rootsy indie rock, with numerous instrumental tracks and reverb-kissed production. The seven-minute-plus "Return to Black" sports flickering electronic beats, while the "Outaouais Trilogy" spreads across three tracks with its pastoral patchwork of acoustic guitars and found sound samples. There are also some more straightforwardly tuneful folk numbers, but these are in the minority.

On the other hand, Blankets! is a concise four tracks, all of which have vocals, making for a more immediate (but perhaps less experimentally immersive) listen. Hear both collections below.

The records will ship the week of May 26. The Acorn will perform at both of Kelp's upcoming anniversary shows, which take place at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto on May 29 and at Barrymore's Music Hall in Ottawa on May 31.

The two-LP reissue can be ordered here on pink and white double vinyl.
