Silvio Horta, best known as the creator of Ugly Betty, has died.
According to Variety, the writer and showrunner was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head in a Miami motel. He was 45.
Horta's first writing credit was for the 1998 slasher flick Urban Legend. He wrote and produced TV series called The Chronicle and Jake 2.0, before finding his biggest success with Ugly Betty in 2006.
The show was an adaptation of the hit Colombian telenovela Yo soy Betty, la fea. It starred America Ferrera as Betty Suarez, who landed a job at a fashion magazine despite her lack of personal style.
It went on two win two Golden Globes, as well as three Primetime Emmy Awards.
Ferrera has since paid homage to Horta. She shared a photo of the Ugly Betty cast with Horta at the Golden Globes, and wrote in the caption: "His talent and creativity brought me and so many others such joy & light."
