Disney's beloved animated series Recess is getting the live-action treatment — but don't expect Lion King-esque CGI. The show is getting an unsanctioned, unofficial independent film that brings fans up to date on what the 3rd Street Elementary School pals got up to after the series ended.

Dubbed Recess: A Fan Film, it's the creation of Vancouver-based duo Jerome Yoo and Kent Donguines, and it will follow the gang as they make the transition to high school.

The plot starts with dear sweet Mikey getting his heart broken by an Ashley, but in the midst of his pals' plans to cheer him up, they discover "trouble lurking in the shadows."

The production team is working on the project on a voluntary basis, but there is an IndieGogo page raising funds to help finance the film.

Amongst the actors who will appear in the film are Deadly Class's Benjamin Wadsworth as TJ and Riverdale's Emilija Baranac as one of the Ashleys. See the full cast of classmates here.

The film is currently in post-production.

If all goes according to plan, the live-action Recess film should be available to stream for free in August.
